Cracked firebrick and missing mortar joints let heat move toward the framing behind the masonry. Small hairlines are common, but open cracks and loose brick should be evaluated before you burn again.
The usual causes are a damper that will not open fully, a rough or undersized smoke chamber, creosote restricting the flue, negative pressure in the house, or a flue that is short relative to the firebox opening. We test the draft to identify which one it is.
Yes. Many dampers can be freed, re-seated and sealed. When the frame itself is rusted through, a top-sealing damper installed at the top of the flue is often the better long-term solution.
Yes. Prefab fireboxes use refractory panels rather than firebrick, and cracked panels are replaced with panels matched to the unit rather than patched.
