A chase cover is the metal lid on top of a framed (prefab) chimney chase — in this photo the rusted galvanized cover we removed sits next to the new stainless steel one we installed. When the old cover corrodes through, water pours straight into the chase structure.

A chimney cap covers the flue opening itself, usually on a masonry chimney. A chase cover is the full metal lid on top of a framed prefabricated chimney chase. Many homes need both — the chase cover protects the structure, and the cap protects the flue.
Yes. Without a cap, rain goes straight down the flue, animals nest inside, and sparks can leave the top and land on the roof. A cap is one of the least expensive parts of a chimney and prevents some of the most expensive damage.
Most builder-installed chase covers are galvanized steel with a flat top. Water sits on them instead of running off, and after 10 to 15 years they corrode through and stain the siding below. A stainless steel cover with slope and a cross-break solves both problems.
